Hello Doug,
I have attached a picture of Charlie Battery officers taken on board the USNS Rose. The picture was taken in late August, 1965 as we sailed through the Panama Canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The "Rose" was the troopship
that we boarded in Charleston, SC on August 18 for the trip to RVN. On board were the Hqs, 3d Brigade; 1st and 2d Battalions, 7th Cavalry; 1st Battalion, 21st FA; and support units.

From left to right: 2d LT Henry Simpson, FO; 1st LT Ron McPherson, XO; 1st LT  Ralph Fisher, AXO; 2d LT Tim Blake, FO; CPT Bob Barker, CO. Not pictured is
1st LT Bill Riddle, FO who took the picture. Also, the battery 1st SGT was Charlie Sanford who later became the battalion SGM. Charlie passed away several years ago. Charlie was 55 years of age when we left FT. Benning and was one of the oldest (if not the oldest) troopers in the entire division. He
was quite a man and a soldier's 1st SGT and respected by all.

LT. Tim Blake was KIA on the first day of the Ia Drang battle. Needless-to-say, we all felt the loss of a fine young man and officer. LT. Bill Riddle was recently inducted into OCS Hall of Fame at FT. Sill. His extrordinary actions in the Ia Drang battle earned him that honor.

Doug, please let me know when you receive this e-mail and if the picture downloads for you. GARRY OWEN, SIR!

Dear Friends of the 1/21st Artillery:

These web pages are for your enjoyment. However I also need your help in making these web pages a place for people to enjoy and learn more about the 1/21st Artillery. I am very proud of the men who served in this unit but I need your help in finding them and getting them to join us. If you have any information you can provide us please let us know. I would also be glad to put your pictures and stories on our pages. If you have a picture, please send it to the webmaster electronically.

Thanks so much for your help,
