DOUGS NOTES
I entered Vietnam in September, 1969 and went to the RVN training in An Khe. I was then sent up to Camp Evens (close to DMZ) and assigned to the 1st 21st Artillery Commo (communications) Section. I spent a week in the Ashau Valley and was in Camp Evans about 1-2 months and then our whole division was sent down south to protect the south against another Tet offensive. I spent about 3 day on a Navy ship, USS San Carlos and convoyed down to Saigon harbor.

Our headquarters unit went to Quan Loi, LZ Andy. While at LZ Andy I worked as a radio operator, wire team chief and classified documents/courier. I spent much of my time on many mountain tops working as a radio relay operator ( (FDC) Fire Direction Control to the (FO) Forward Observers ). In Commo, I worked for Captain Lovejoy, Lt. Kronitus and
SFC Williams, SSG Randy Rich and Sgt. Poland. On the mountains I worked with SP4s Ray Mino, Knouse (St Louis) and Schutte. I left Vietnam in September, 1968.

The 1/21st at this time consisted of three batteries of 105 howitzers. 1 outside unit (       ) of 155 howitzers was also attached and we had the ability to call on Blue Max (         )  cobra gunships, if needed. Woodpecker (light helicopters) (             ) provided support for general transportation to landing zones.

    Don Cramer:

When I first came to Camp Evans I was greeted by Don Cramer from the 1/21st Commo section. He was very happy-go-lucky. Don had spent some time in the Ashau Valley and had gone through quite a bit while there. He had just a short time left in Vietnam and was headed home when he died in a helicopter/plane crash in Camp Evans.
